When God Has Other Plans

From Joshua Wilchcombe:

Here I finally was. After being homeless, living in hotels and a halfway house, I lived with a mentor who eventually helped me get into Dallas Baptist University. The school accepting me with a 1.3 GPA—only God can produce such a highly unlikely circumstance—was followed by getting a full scholarship offer to play NAIA basketball at a school in Oklahoma, playing for a coach on fire for Christ. The Lord was aligning everything. That was until I received the news that I still had not met the requirements to be eligible to play. I would have to sit out the entire first semester of my junior year. So, for the next four months, my job was to be a great practice player: encourage my teammates, give lots of high fives, provide water when they were thirsty, and, most importantly, be a witness to everyone on campus.

This was definitely one of those “when it doesn't go how you thought” situations. I’m here to tell you that in life, rarely do things go exactly as you envision them. So, the deeper question to ask ourselves is: Who will you decide to be when it doesn't go your way?

As we enter into Holy Week, my challenge for us, brothers and sisters, is to realize how we must part ways with our own will and our ideas of how things should be done. Our imagination should be explored, but bowed at the feet of the cross. I envisioned many places I would play, how I would do it, and who I would play in front of. The Lord had other plans.

As we celebrate our Savior, Jesus, conquering death and crushing sin once and for all on the cross—being the only spotless, sinless, and worthy sacrifice to mediate for our souls—He is only this because He gave us the example of yielding to the will of the Father. The implications if He had chosen not to would have prevented our faith from existing and given our souls a sentence of eternal death. We must follow His example. He knows best.

December 2nd, 2016  was when I gave my life to Christ, and I can safely say that my life has never been the same. However, at first, I must admit there still were many skeptical thoughts and questions
